Become the Guy with the Cool Room

Be the guy with the cool room

There’s More to Life Than Navy Sheets and a Friday Beers Flag

Picture this: flickering fluorescent lights, box fans blowing hallway air into half-open rooms, and two guys sharing what appears to be one incomplete sheet set between them. The laundry situation is unclear, but it is not good. The smell confirms it.

This is the reality for far too many guys heading to college, and we’re here to say it doesn’t have to be.

The assumption seems to be that caring about a dorm room is tedious or not worth the effort. But here is the thing: this is the first home you will have as an adult. It reflects how you want to show up. A little intention goes a long way, and it does not require fifteen hours of browsing duvet covers. It requires about five decisions.

And if the adult argument is not convincing enough, consider the fact that other people will see this room. Girls might see this room… A bare mattress and a pile of mystery laundry is not the impression anyone is going for.

Here are our room tips:

1. Cohesive Bedding

Two sets of sheets, two pillows, and a comforter. That is the whole formula. Wash one set while the other is on the bed, and never deal with a bare mattress situation again. Add a mattress topper while you are at it; that standard dorm mattress is not doing anyone any favors.

2. Shower Supplies

Be the guy with the cool room. Here are the five things every guy needs to turn a bare dorm into an actual living space, without the stress.

A caddy, shower shoes, towels, and a robe. The shower shoes are non-negotiable. Athlete’s foot in a communal bathroom is a preventable problem and there is no reason to learn that lesson the hard way.

3. Actual Lighting

The overhead fluorescent light is not your friend. A floor lamp and a desk lamp are all it takes to make a room feel like a place a person actually lives. The difference is immediate and significant.

4. Something to Put Clothes In

A dresser and a hamper. Clean clothes, dirty clothes, and damp clothes all living in the same pile on the floor is a recipe for everything smelling like something went wrong. Separating them takes approximately zero extra effort once the systems are in place.

5. One Piece of Artwork

One or two pieces. That is it. A room with a single intentional thing on the wall looks completely different from a room with nothing. It does not need to be a museum-worthy choice. It just needs to exist.

The bar is not high. The guys with the good rooms are not doing anything complicated. They just showed up with the basics and put in minimal effort that paid off immediately. The room will be more comfortable, more functional, and a lot better to spend time in.

That is the goal. We’ve got everything needed to get there.
